Qualifications

Must possess a 2.0 or better or better cumulative grade point average (GPA), a 3.0 or better grade in each completed English course, have successfully completed either English 211, 212, 213, 214, or an equivalent English composition course. Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evening hours or weekends while working with a diverse population. Ability to effectively communicate the principles and techniques of English writing for academic purposes.

A writing tutor needs to understand written and verbal instructions, to communicate effectively, to take direction and work as part of a team. Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Familiarity in software and equipment used in the lab to include PC hardware and Windows-based operating and application software.

Preference will be given to full time students.

Responsiblities

Tutor students in specific English areas, primarily in grammar and mechanics, sentence structure, basic writing, and effectively communicate the principles and techniques of the subject area.

Work with students to improve their writing assignments while helping them understand their teacher's expectations. Provide basic technical assistance in the use of computer equipment and software during open lab hours (software includes basic Windows, Microsoft Word, and various tutorial software programs).

Provide minor troubleshooting of printer and hardware in the lab. Monitor students at all times and maintain a professional working environment. Maintain records and participate in Writing Center orientation and workshops. Attend all meetings as called by the Writing Center supervisors (tutor training will be mandatory).

Other duties are assigned.
