Our Mission
The UAA Writing Center supports writers of all abilities and from all disciplines in the academic community. This center brings writers and peer consultants together to discuss the nature and presentation of ideas. We help students gain confidence, articulate ideas, acquire strategies, and learn the skills to engage effectively in their writing process. Our approach is to attend to both the short-term goal of improved papers and the long-term goal of improved writing, critical thinking, and reading skills.
Our work with mechanics does not involve editing or proofreading, but instead what we call "instructional editing," in which we assist the students in addressing patterns of error. Additionally, tutors can assist with other writing-related projects such as resumes, scholarship letters, etc. The Writing Center works to suppport classroom instruction, not to replace it.
This website is divided into three dominant sections: The Writing Center for Students, for Faculty, and for Tutors. As the site develops, you will find useful information and documentation relevant to these three groups of people.
