Purpose of the Society
Sigma Tau Delta’s central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature. One of the largest members of the Association of College Honor Societies, Sigma Tau Delta has over 600 active chapters, more than 900 faculty sponsors, and inducts approximately 7,000 members annually. Our members have the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding achievements, enrich their education, help them make career choices, and advance their careers.

Requirements for Membership
To qualify for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, students must be declared English majors or minors, have completed at least two literature courses beyond the freshman requirements, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. There is a one-time membership fee of $47. Please pick up an application in the Department of English. To apply, complete the following application.

Benefits of Membership
Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment. It also serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. It provides opportunities for those interested in English language and literature to join with like-minded persons at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Members receive and have the opportunity to contribute to the award-winning literary publication The Rectangle and are eligible to compete for a number of prizes for excellent writing. Student members are also eligible to compete for several $1,000 - $2,500 scholarships and awards.

Pacific Rim Conference on Literature & Rhetoric
The Alpha Epsilon Nu Chapter at UAA organizes the annual Pacific Rim Conference on Literature & Rhetoric (formerly the Pacific Rim Literary Conference) in partnership with the Department of English. This weekend-long graduate literary conference provides members the opportunity to plan and participate in a formal literary conference. This year’s conference will be held March 28-29. The theme for the 2008 conference is Evolving Intertextualities: Voices, Visions, and Virtualities. Confirmed keynote speakers are Dr. Lisa Surridge from The University of Victoria and Dr. Bruce McComiskey from the University of Alabama.

Other Events
Members of the Alpha Epsilon Nu chapter of Sigma Tau Delta organize and participate in a variety of other events; this year we will have a chili luncheon during PacRim, and we are discussing helping to run UAA’s creative writing magazine, Understory.

We are also looking for new officers for the Fall semester, and we are always looking for new members!
